The Assignment

Imagine a day where health, food, fitness, and well being weren’t an issue for you. A day where trying to manage your weight, getting to the gym, and preparing the perfect meal based on what is considered healthy today was just as simple as getting out of bed and brushing your teeth in the morning. Seems these days that having to face these topics creates the desire of not getting wanting out of bed in the morning.

There is more confusion, see last weeks blog on Confusion, on what to do and what not to do than ever before. We are bombarded with enough information to make our heads spin. To make us give up. And to make us feel like failures about it because we cannot stick with a routine.

Why is this? Why do we feel this need to live up to the expectations of the book writers, the bloggers, the magazines, and the gal at the gym whose glutes you can bounce a quarter off of? It seems these days that we feel so limited as to what we can eat and how we can exercise. Which is truly ironic because there is more food out there in the world that you have never even heard of than what you see at your grocery store. There is produce  in your grocery store that might look funny and so you just pass it by. There are fruits and vegetables that look intimidating and you would have no clue what to do with it, so forget it. Ruta-what-baga??? So you just move along and grab the same old same old.

It doesn’t need to be so complicated. I’ve said it a million times, and more often than not, I’m also the one that needs to have it thrown at me. Health and wellness and weight and fitness are really not complicated. They are not hard.

It takes 3 weeks, 21 days, to make a new habit. It took time to create the habits you are in now as well. We have gotten into a habit/routine of eating and living a certain way. Time to break those old habits and start new ones……that’s if you really want to see a difference in your life. Take control…take charge.

This isn’t just about physical health, weight, or fitness. This is about your lifestyle in general. If you are experiencing upsets at work, at home, and personally within yourself, it’s time to do some evaluating of yourself.

I had a counseling session earlier today. My counselor gave me an assignment. She said between now and our next visit, I want you to do two things that are specifically for you. For you, by you, and to you. A gift if you will. You don’t necessarily have to spend money on yourself, but don’t limit yourself either. This is not to come from anyone else. Do not tell anyone about this. it’s not important for anyone to know about it. It’s a day, a week, an hour that you will gift yourself. The purpose of this assignment is to acknowledge yourself. To bring you back to that time in your life where you did do more for yourself  before you got caught up in the humdrum of life as you now know it. It’s so easy to get caught up in day to day routines and then if you find yourself not happy, pointing blame at others or your job or whatever.

When you treat yourself well, love, honor, and respect yourself, you will see that others will love, honor, and respect you as well. You will see that that kind of energy will naturally flow back into your life. This is how it’s supposed to be. And this too, like our health and wellness, doesn’t need to be so complicated. In fact, if we have this in line….all the other stuff will fall in line as well. Self love and self respect ultimately will lead to healthier choices in life. You will find that because you have a healthier outlook in life, you will gravitate towards healthier people, healthier foods, you will desire to exercise more, and you will even be happier in your place of employment. It really is full circle. Happiness brings more of the like. People will be attracted to your energy and want to be around you more. And those who don’t have like energy will simply fall out of your life the way it was intended.

Taking care of ourselves, nurturing ourselves, and loving ourselves, isn’t something that generally comes naturally to us. Not as adults anyway. We are so busy working, taking care of the family, and driving ourselves crazy with life responsibilities, that we forget to take care of the one who is taking care.

Taking 21 days of establishing a new daily routine that eventually will become a habit, is the ultimate way of developing the health that we desire. It can be as simple as meditating 20 minutes a day. It can be to treat yourself to spa treatment, personal training sessions, lunch out at your favorite restaurant (by yourself), a weekend away, purchasing some clothes for yourself, or as simple as just reading a book under a tree. It can be something that you’ve always wanted to do or something new that inspires you. Something perhaps you heard a friend talking about. Whatever sparks your interest. Do it!!

I have a few things in mind. And when after my next session, I will share them with you. And I hope to hear back from you at that time as well. But for now, just think about the areas of your life that you feel the lack.  And remember, this is not about another person. It’s not about relationships with others. It’s about your relationship with yourself. When that is solid….you will see that all other relationships, health, fitness, and nutritional issues will naturally start to fall into place.

But you’ve got to give it 21 days…..

See you then!!Image
